NTDC State Champions

Three USF Holland drivers join the best drivers in the country at the annual National Truck Driving Championships in Houston, Texas, August 19-23.

With the emphasis on safety, drivers must be accident-free for the twelve months leading up to their state competitions.

To advance from state competitions to the nationals, drivers must achieve the top honors in their respective classes, demonstrating excellence in their driving and maneuvering skills, pre-trip inspections and written exams.

Congratulations to USF Holland drivers Herschel Evans, Atlanta; Russ Simpson, Columbus; and Robert Wolford, Detroit who will be competing in Houston. Russ and Robert also received their states' "Rookie of the Year" awards.

Factory Orders Up in June

In early August, the U.S. Commerce Department reported factory orders for June were up 1.7 percent, beating economic forecasts of a 0.7 percent gain.

In addition, the durable goods segment of factory orders rose 0.8 percent for the month.

New Stimulus Bill Includes Transportation Funding

Nearly $5 billion of a new $24 billion economic stimulus supplement is earmarked for infrastructure and other transportation-related funding, according to Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-West Virginia and chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

The bill, which is yet to go to the Senate floor, proposes $3.65 billion for additional highway funding and a provision for a cash transfer to keep the Highway Trust Fund solvent through 2009.

Longshoreman Reach Tentative Agreement

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) reached a tentative agreement on a new contract.

The new contract is slated to replace one which expired July 1, 2008, but was extended to maintain port operations during negotiations.

Members of the ILWU and PMA must ratify the new six-year labor contract before it can go into effect.

The contract covers more than 25,000 dock and warehouse workers at 29 West Coast ports. The PMA represents cargo carriers, unloading companies and terminal operators.
