Credit card use declines among U.S. shoppers

Wal-Mart stores are seeing consumers use their credit cards less frequently. "Customers have maxed out on their credit limits," according to Eduardo Castro-Wright, head of Wal-Mart stores in the U.S. This experience is consistent with a Reuters' survey on U.S. holiday shopping intentions that revealed 60 percent of shoppers plan to use credit cards less often this year for purchasing holiday gifts.

Revenue for U.S. Highway Trust Fund declines

Americans cut their driving by 90 billion miles during the last 11 months, resulting in lower revenue for the Highway Trust Fund. The fund is the nation's primary source for financing new bridges, interstate repairs and expanded transit projects. Already the recipient of $8 billion in emergency financing, the fund received $3 billion less this fiscal year and is expected to run out of money in 2009.

Hazmat re-routing regulations on the fast track

Before leaving office, Bush administration officials are trying to finalize the federal rule that governs re-routing around major cities shipments of hazardous materials transported via rail. The Office of Management and Budget, determines routes for hazardous materials based on security, safety, and other factors.
