Recess appointments

Among the 15 recess appointmentsthe White House made that will affect trade, labor and security are: Alan D. Hirschhorn, under secretary of commerce for Export Administration and head of the Bureau of Industry and Security, Department of Commerce; Islam A. Siddiqui, chief agricultural negotiator, Office of the U.S. Trade Representative; Michael Punke,deputy trade representative-Geneva, Office of the U.S. Trade Representative; Craig Becker, board member, National Labor Relations Board; Mark Pearce, board member, National Labor Relations Board; and Rafael Borras, under secretary for management, Department of Homeland Security.

ATA testifies before the House

Speaking before the U.S. House of Representatives Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies, Senior Vice President of the American Trucking Associations Tim Lynch warned that our nation's aging transportation infrastructure has "weakened the nation's competitive position relative to other countries."

He went on to say that, "Failing to address growing congestion problems will cause costs to rise, translating into higher consumer prices and slower job growth . . ."

Durable goods orders continue to show improvements

For the third straight month, durable goods orders in February were up, according to the Commerce Department.

The increase in orders was attributed to increased demand for commercial aircraft, machinery and metals.
