What's New at New Penn
High-performance service supports inventory management strategies
Business inventories are sitting at 10-year lows. While tight inventory management provides cost control, it also creates the risk of lost sales because of inventory stock outs, and production-line slowdowns if materials are not on hand.

Tight inventory management strategies require rapid replenishment from vendors. When it comes to the transportation modes available to support this rapid replenishment, air cargo and parcel may be too expensive, and intermodal and truckload may be too slow or involve excessive inventory.
Fortunately, there's a flexible, reliable transportation solution: New Penn! Our superior performance in speed, reliability, responsiveness, flexibility and efficiency will help keep your business at peak performance.
A pioneer in Next Day Service in the Northeast, we handle more than 94 percent of shipments with the speed of next-day deliveries.
With our advanced technology and innovative freight-handling techniques,we make 99.8 percent of pickups as scheduled. On-time deliveries consistently are in the 98-percent range . . . and even higher for our guaranteed and expedited services. And our claims ratio remains at less than half the industry average. That's reliability!
Our customer information services, information technologies and teamwork help us respond quickly and accurately to scheduling, pickup and tracking of individual shipments. And they can support the reporting/analysis of your overall shipping activities.
This responsiveness and technology also enables us to stay flexible for your supply chain needs, offering next-day service throughout the Northeast and Canada, weekly sailings to Puerto Rico, and consolidation/distribution, import/export, interregional, and tradeshow exhibit solutions.
Add it all together, and you get an efficient transportation partner for managing tight inventory levels. Check out our updated transit maps. Better yet, check out our service. Call today at 1-800-285-5000, or simply go online to schedule your next shipment!

A word from our customers
"I can never thank Randy Hartshorn [sales representative], Brian Callahan [service center manager] and Mike Dupius [driver] enough for the help you gave me on Saturday, Oct. 23. We here at Ulbrich were in a major dilemma with a hot international shipment, and you once again bailed us out on a Saturday without any thought.
"I felt bad bugging Randy on a Saturday while he was at a Yale Football Game! Please know how grateful I am. This is why time and time again, I choose New Penn over any carrier because of the wonderful service I get. You guys in the office, the terminal and the drivers for New Penn go above and beyond, providing excellent service to us at Ulbrich without fail.
"We have a great business relationship, and I know you are the one carrier I can count on every single time. I wanted to send you a proper thanks, so you can forward to your company president. Once again . . . hats off and thanks. Do you now get the Superman 'S'' for your suits? Your grateful client,"

Say goodbye to shipments
There are lots of reasons you might want to return a shipment, and one very simple way to make it happen! Registered users of newpenn.com have discovered just how quick and easy it is to schedule a return shipment.

With the New Penn Returns Management online tool, you can schedule a return shipment from the convenience of your computer. Because the system "remembers" your past shipping activities, completing the bill of lading for return shipments often takes just a few clicks of the mouse.
When complete, simply click the "Create Bill of Lading" and "Request a Pickup button" at the bottom of the page. Your pickup request is automatically routed to a dedicated customer service team that immediately handles your request—no need to call!
Once you've created a return in the system, you can save the bill of lading as a named template. Then, the next time you have a return, you can select and update prior templates or create a new template.
To use the Returns Management online tool, you must be registered for www.newpenn.com. Not a registered user? It's easy to register today.

Be safe this winter: Driving tips from New Penn Driver Will Chrvala
"The holiday season presents additional hazards for motorists," says Will Chrvala, 12-time Pennsylvania Truck Driving Champion and 37-year professional driver.
"Everyone is busy, and it's easy to be distracted or get confused at on/off ramps. To stay healthy and alert, get proper rest and exercise, and remember, breakfast is the most important meal of the day!"
Here are more tips from Will that will help you stay safe this winter.

Give yourself extra space.
Extra distance between you and the vehicle in front of you gives you more room to maneuver. You should always have enough space and time to move out of harm's way.
Hold your steering wheel firmly.
Sudden, sharp moves can quickly cause you to lose control of your vehicle. You can keep your vehicle steady through ruts in the road, strong winds and on ice by holding your steering wheel firmly.
Brake and accelerate lightly.
Try not to do anything forcefully in bad weather. When you need to slow down quickly in slippery conditions, try lightly pumping your brakes. This reduces your chance of locking your tires and spinning out of control.
If your vehicle has an anti-locking braking system (ABS), you should press and hold the brake down as far as possible in an emergency. The ABS prevents the wheels from locking, enabling you to steer around obstacles.

Delivering an exceptional customer experience
"Billy's customers love him," says Todd McCloud, service center manager in Queens, N.Y.
"I just try to do the right thing," says Billy Zagelbaum.

Zagelbaum, a 10-year veteran with New Penn knows his customers . . . and they know how to reach him. On his cell phone.
"I've worked the same area for four years, and I try to keep ahead of my customers. Most of them have my cell phone number. That way, they can call me in advance. For example, with one of my daily stops, if they have a lot of skids one day, I can be ready when I get there."
A professional driver for 30 years, Zagelbaum enjoys his job and being out on the street. It also gives him perspective on New Penn versus other service providers. "I think we care more. We try harder," says Zagelbaum.
Maybe that confidence is why Zagelbaum has been so successful in bringing additional shipments to New Penn. "I'll see a customer calling [a competitor] and they may be able to save $8 on a shipment. With our [Ship Now. Save Now.] driver program, I can use a sticker right then for savings that go right on the bill."
Zagelbaum is just one example of the people and service that keep customers coming back to New Penn.

A place New Penn calls home
New York City
While the population of most large old cities in the Northeast and Midwest declined in the recent past, New York City continues to grow. . .and at a substantial rate.
City planners estimate the five boroughs—Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island—grew by 4.8 percent from 2000 to 2009 with Staten Island leading the way with an increase of almost 11 percent.
From the Dominican Republic to Bangladesh, sub-Saharan Africa to China, people from all over the world continue to flock to Gotham.
Approximately 37 percent of the city's 8.4 million people were born abroad, and New Yorkers speak around 800 different languages. 83 percent of New Yorkers claim affiliation with an organized religion.
With the abundance of cultural, religious and linguistic diversity, there is little wonder many say that it's the people who make New York City so great.
New Penn has called NYC home since the mid-1980s. We serve the boroughs and Nassau and Suffolk counties with next-day service from our 75-dock service center in Queens. "It's not uncommon for a driver working the Hampton area to drive 300 miles a day," says Todd McCloud, Queens service center manager.
Deliveries to midtown Manhattan offer different challenges for drivers. "Dealing with gridlock and strict Department of Transportation regulations are part of the job for city deliveries," explains McCloud. "It's common for us to have to park three or four blocks away and break down the skid to make an inside delivery to a location on the 30th or 40th floor in a building."
McCloud adds that the city's restrictions also include vehicle requirements. "We have vehicles that are designed specifically to meet length and height restrictions, and we're set up to go underground."
"We've also taken the lead with Homeland Security compliance," says McCloud. "Our drivers went through the background checks for STA (Security Threat Assessment) certification. This gives us full access at the airports to make our pickups and deliveries."
New Penn knows New York, and shippers know they can count on New Penn, the leader in next-day service. To schedule a pickup, go to www.newpenn.com or call 1-800-285-5000.

Industry News
U.S. homebuilder confidence inches upward
For the second straight month, confidence among U.S. homebuilders was up in November, according to the National Association of Home Builders/Wells Fargo confidence index. The index reached a five-month high at 16. Index readings below 50 mean more respondents perceive conditions as poor. For the five years leading up to December 2007, readings averaged 54. Economists point to the abundance of existing homes on the market which compete against new-home construction.
U.S. factory output up in October
The U.S. Federal Reserve said U.S. factory output was up 0.5 percent in October, attributing the improvement to an increase in autos, appliances and business equipment. Overall industrial production, which includes factories, mines and utilities, was flat for the month, primarily because of warm weather and the resulting reduced demand for electricity and gas heat.
U.S. retailers see monthly gains continue
October saw the fourth straight month for retail gains, according to the U.S. Commerce Department. Excluding auto parts, retail sales were up 1.2 percent over September and 7.3 percent over the prior year. Leading the increase were building supplies (up 12.2 percent over prior year), and clothing and sporting goods (up 6.7 percent over prior year).
