What's New at New Penn
Don't let the cold slow you down
If you're shipping products that are sensitive to cold temperatures, don't let a fear of freezing slow down your supply chain this winter.

New Penn is committed to providing superior service for your products that require freeze protection. Our freeze-protection service features well-defined procedures and equipment to protect your shipments while in our care.
- From the time you call for a freeze-protection shipment pickup, your shipment is identified in our computerized dispatch system. That means immediate planning and constant monitoring to ensure your shipments receive the proper protection while in our system.
- Weather monitoring alerts our service centers of pending severe weather in the area and includes specific instructions for the care of your freeze-protection shipments.
- A fleet of heated, insulated trailers keeps hot air contained and circulating in the cargo area.

- Technically-engineered and environmentally safe Cargoquilt® covers provide an additional blanket of protection to maintain the temperature of your shipment while in transit.
- Warming rooms at each of our service centers are available for shipments not immediately being moved.
The most important thing to know about our systematic approach to freeze protection? It works! Out of almost 5,000 freeze-protection shipments last year, New Penn had only four claims. That's 99.9992 percent claim-free service!
Freeze Protection is available on direct service destinations in the Northeast and points in the Southeastern United States and Canada. Freeze Protection Services are offered on shipments tendered Monday through Thursday.
When calling for a pickup, let us know about your freezable shipments and their destinations. Then simply mark your bills of lading with "protect from freezing" to receive this specialized service. We'll handle it from there!

Points on Performance
Be safe this winter: Driving tips from New Penn driver Will Chrvala
"Drive with all your senses . . . and with common sense," says Will Chrvala. Good advice from a 12-time Pennsylvania Truck Driving Champion.
As a professional driver for more than 37 years, Will speaks from experience. "In this area, we get everything from a light coating to blizzards that drop three feet of snow. You learn from experience how to drive safely in these different conditions, as well as the places to avoid, such as hills where you can get stuck."
Here are some more tips from Will that will help you stay safe this winter.
Tip #1: Slow down
These days, everybody is in a hurry. In wintry conditions, driving too fast can lead to accidents.
- A slower speed gives you more time to react if something occurs.
- Extra distance between you and the vehicle in front of you also gives you more room to maneuver.
- Extra patience and care for other drivers can help a lot this time of year.
Tip #2: Be Prepared
Be ready for what the weather might bring your way. Yes, this is common sense, but there are times when the weather looks great at the beginning of a trip and then changes dramatically. Be prepared.
- Proper clothing (loose layers of clothing, extra gloves, rain gear)
- A flashlight in the glove box
- A blanket, food and water
- A bag of sand or salt and extra windshield washer fluid
- A windshield scraper
- Jumper cables
- Tire chains or traction mats
- Have at least a half tank of gas at all times during the winter
- Plan long trips carefully—what weather conditions may you encounter?
Tip #3: Complete a Pre-Trip Inspection
Professional drivers are required to inspect their vehicles before every trip. We do a visual, hands-on inspection and check all important items, including tires, wiper blades and fluid and lights.
- Check your vehicle often. Be sure to have a mechanic check it at the beginning of the winter.
- Check your spare tire regularly. It's a hard lesson to learn when you go to change a tire only to find your spare is also flat.

Delivering an exceptional customer experience
"It's all about teamwork and that means good communications," says Dave Staaby, a city driver out of Reading, Pa.
"I'm a link between our customers and the service center manager, the dispatcher and sales. If I have unusual time constraints, I notify dispatch. If I see an opportunity for new business, I let the account executive know. If I see another carrier is after our customers, I talk with my manager. These are my customers, and I work for a great company!"
Dave's been a professional driver for 24 years, almost half that time with New Penn. "I enjoy my job and meeting the people. There are a lot of cool people in the world, and I learn a lot," he says. Dave goes on to say that by working in the same area for more than 10 years, he's come to know his customers. "I try to be as minimally intrusive as possible when I'm at their facilities, but you get to know people, share their concerns for their business, and sympathize with their struggles."
"One thing New Penn impresses upon us is that there are no unimportant jobs, we're all important," says Dave, adding, "And there is no unimportant freight on our trucks, it's all important. It may not have a high dollar value, but it may be something that keeps a production line going. We treat it all with the utmost importance."
Dave is just one example of the people and service that keep customers coming back to New Penn.

A place New Penn calls home
Philadelphia
So much of our country's history started here in Philadelphia.
In 1774, the First Continental Congress convened at Carpenter Hall, drafting the resolution to boycott trade with the British.
In 1775, delegates returned to Philadelphia for the Second Continental Congress, meeting in a place now called Independence Hall. Here they appointed a committee to draft, and later signed, a Declaration of Independence.
To summon people for the declaration's first reading in 1776, the bell atop Independence Hall rang out. Inscribed with the statement, "Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof" the Liberty Bell is still on display today.
Carpenter Hall, Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell are just the beginning. Among the many sites Philadelphia offers visitors are Franklin Court, a museum with printing press and working post office on the site of Benjamin Franklin's house; the Betsy Ross House, which recreates the period with artifacts and re-enactors; the burial ground at Christ Church, final resting place for many of our country's early leaders; and the National Constitution Center with its exhibits and events on American history. A walk through Old City features more museums, historic homes, trendy restaurants and shops.
New Penn has called Philadelphia home since the early 1970s. Our service center here, one of the largest in our network, moved in 1999 into a new building featuring 92 dock doors. And to ensure the safekeeping of shipments, we invested in high-level yard security, including video surveillance and electric fencing.
"I think one of the things that sets us apart from other providers in the market is our extensive next-day coverage," says Steve Kapfer, service center manager. "We offer one-day service as far north as Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, and into Maryland, Delaware and all of Pennsylvania."
"By industry standards, we have a very new fleet," Steve adds. "Last year, we brought in 30 brand-new trucks, all with clean idles for lower emissions, and more than half our power units are less than three years old."
New Penn knows Philadelphia, and shippers know they can count on New Penn, the leader in next-day service. To schedule a pickup, go to www.newpenn.com or call 1-800-285-5000.

Industry News
Supply chains seen as key to retail growth and savings
According to Casey Chroust, executive vice president of the Retail Industry Leaders Association, "The strategic emphasis has shifted from last year's focus on cost control to a more balanced perspective between cost and service and revenue growth." He goes on to say retailers and their supply chain organizations are "really focusing on growth-oriented supply chain issues." The association's recent study on the "State of the Retail Supply Chain" points to returning emphasis on infrastructure capacity and the importance of supply chain management.
Housing starts hit a five-month high
New-home building picked up in September. Housing starts were up 0.3 percent from August to an annual rate of 610,000, the highest since April. Looking toward future construction, building permits dropped 5.6 percent in September to the lowest level since April 2009; applications for multifamily units decreased 20 percent and applications for single-family units rose 0.5 percent.
U.S. trade deficit grew in August
The trade gap widened 8.8 percent to $46.3 billion in August. U.S. imports rose 2.1 percent to $200.2 billion; exports were up 0.2 percent to $153.9 billion, the most in two years and a reflection of demand for food and industrial supplies. Imports from China were up to a record $35.3 billion.
