What's New at New Penn
What do 10,000 shippers have in common?
Ten thousand shippers in the Northeast and Puerto Rico know that when it comes to quality services, New Penn delivers. They know that New Penn provides on-time performance that is consistently in the 98-percent range . . . and even higher for our expedited and guaranteed services.

They also know that with New Penn, you experience personalized customer service from a team of drivers, customer service representatives and account managers who know your area, value your business and go the extra mile to meet your needs.
One more reason is our strategically located operations, or service centers, as we like to call them. We have 25 centers from Montreal to Baltimore, providing comprehensive coverage throughout the Northeast. In many cases, these centers are situated close to primary transportation arteries. That can be important when it comes to delivering early in the day, which New Penn does most of the time.
Our equipment is designed for urban areas, too. For example, our trailers typically are shorter and narrower than standard-dimension equipment. This increases our maneuverability on congested city streets for better service and safer deliveries. All service centers also maintain equipment with hydraulic liftgates to help securely load and unload your shipments at sites without docks. This contributes to our industry-leading low claim ratio of 0.39 percent, year-to-date.
Customers know that information technology and timely communications are essential in quality customer service. They see our real-time online tracking updates and automatic shipment notifications as a way to improve the service they offer their customers. And with our suite of online tools, customers have found new ways to save time and save money.
For almost 80 years, New Penn has been delighting customers with award-winning service. And when you look at our combination of on-time performance, customer service, information technology, equipment and operations . . . it all adds up to tremendous value for your supply chain. See for yourself. Go online or call New Penn at 1-800-285-5000 to schedule your next shipment.

Points on Performance
Run with the big dog
When it comes to shipping to Puerto Rico, run with the big dog, New Penn, the largest NVOCC in the Northeast.
Surprised? It's a fact. From our South Kearny service center, New Penn typically handles about 25 containers each week destined for San Juan.
What does this mean for you? To begin with, you have the assurance your shipment will be onboard on the desired sailing date; nothing gets held back.
More than that, though, this level of volume helps when it comes to the order in which containers are loaded onto the ship. For example, New Penn containers frequently receive "last on" status, which means they are the first containers off the ship in San Juan.
Once in San Juan, this level of service carries over to our inland transportation. In fact, if a ship arrives early in the morning, your shipments can be off the pier, into our service center and out for delivery that same day.
High volume also brings a level of expertise that leads the pack. For example, with our simple documentation, we make the process easier for you, and we'll even communicate electronically with the U.S. Census Bureau on your behalf.
For more information on our door-to-door control to and from Puerto Rico, call 1-800-688-1658 in New Jersey or 1-800-437-2802 in Puerto Rico.

News/Other Services
Revised BOL for shipping hazardous materials
Beginning October 1, 2010, some hazardous material shipping documents may require a contact company name or contract number in addition to the 24-hour emergency response telephone number. New Penn will be ready for those shipments with a revised bill of lading form.
This new version will be available as a paper form, EDI and on our New Penn website.
When you create a BOL online you also have the option to simultaneously schedule a pickup, print a PDF of the bill of lading and print a shipping label. The electronic BOL data integrates into the New Penn systems, which minimizes key-stroke billing errors and improves data integrity for detailed tracking information on the shipment.
For more information on the revised bill of lading, go to newpenn.com or call 1-800-285-5000.

A place New Penn calls home
Boston
Some may call it Beantown, but to sports enthusiasts "City of Champions" may be a more appropriate name for Boston. After all, what other city can claim six championship titles in just one decade?
America's pastime is alive and well at Fenway Park. A founding member of the American League of Major League Baseball, the Boston Red Sox have won seven World Series titles and 11 American League pennants. And who can forget such baseball greats as the legendary Cy Young, Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, Carlton Fisk, Wade Boggs and most recently, Jim Rice?
As temperatures cool, the New England Patriots take to the gridiron. Charter members of the American Football League in 1960, the Boston Patriots changed their name and league on the way to six Super Bowl appearances and three titles.
For hardwood fans, the Boston Celtics have the honor of winning more World Championship titles than any other National Basketball Association team—17 so far! And the leprechaun on the court at TD Garden has smiled on such hall of famers as Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, John Havlicek, Dave Cowens and Larry Bird.
In another first, the Boston Bruins were among the first American teams to enter the National Hockey League. The newly formed team joined the league in 1924, and by 1929 had won the first of its five Stanley Cups. Over it's 86-year history, the Bruins have had 17 appearances in the playoffs, bringing the championship to Boston five times.
A relative newcomer to Boston's legacy of winners, the New England Revolution soccer team was founded in 1995 and is one of the original 10 clubs of Major League Soccer. Through the 2009 season, The Revs have reached the MLS Cup playoffs in eight straight seasons, advanced four times to MLS Cup play, and was the first MLS team to win SuperLiga.
Certainly a winner in professional sports, Boston also is the home to the granddaddy of annual marathons. The Boston Marathon has been challenging runners with its hills since 1897.
In a town full of champions, New Penn feels right at home.
Our Boston service center in Billerica has a large next-day footprint, reaching as far as the ports in New Jersey and deep into Pennsylvania. And shippers looking for service in the Boston metropolitan area get Confidence Delivered® with New Penn.
To learn more about our Boston service, or to schedule a pickup, go to newpenn.com or call 1-800-285-5000.

Industry News
Manufacturing growth continues
In the United States and internationally, the manufacturing sector expanded during August. In the United States, this marks the 13th consecutive month of expansion for the sector. According to the Institute for Supply Management, its manufacturing index rose from 55.5 in July to 56.3 in August (a reading above 50 indicates growth).
NAFTA trade volume up
The Transportation Department reported that June trade using surface transportation between the United States and Canada and Mexico was up 4.6 percent in value over the prior month, and up 37.6 percent over the same month in 2009. Surface transportation trade between the United States and Canada totaled $42 billion for June; surface transportation trade between the United States and Mexico was at 27.8 billion.
Consumer confidence up slightly
The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index for August was at 53.5, up from 51 in July. The August 2009 reading was 54.5.
"Consumer confidence posted a modest gain in August, the result of an improvement in consumers' short-term outlook. Consumers' assessment of current conditions, however, was less favorable as employment concerns continue to weigh heavily on consumers' attitudes. Expectations about future business and labor market conditions have brightened somewhat, but overall, consumers remain apprehensive about the future," says Lynn Franco, director of the Conference Board's Consumer Research Center.
