What's New at New Penn

Priority treatment for every shipment

Your checked baggage should be treated as well as a New Penn shipment! Think about it. When you fly, you bring your suitcase to the terminal, check it, and then pick it up at the destination airport. Simple.

New Penn moves shipments in a similar way, except we also go to the places of your choosing to pick up and deliver your shipments . . . and then there's some cargo that requires extra attention, such as guaranteed delivery by a precise time or protection from freezing.

And unlike a suitcase, most of what we handle is big—really big!

To make LTL shipping work, New Penn employees are on the job around the clock.

Mornings are dedicated to deliveries. "When I come in, the first thing I do is review my run sheet to see what's planned, determine whether the shipments are loaded on the trailer for efficient delivery, and check for anything unusual—shipments with tight time constraints or requiring special equipment," says Dave Staaby, a Reading, Pa., city driver.

Then it's on to the street, making deliveries as quickly as safely possible. Heavy traffic is part of the job and patience is important. An unusual traffic bottleneck this morning? "The safest thing to do is sit back and call dispatch so they can instruct the other drivers to take different routes," Dave says.

Drivers get to know their customers . . . the days they typically ship, the time of day when shipments usually are ready for pickup. "While I'm in their neighborhood, I'll call dispatch and see whether a customer has a pickup for me," Dave says.

With the trailers now empty, afternoons are for pickups. At pickup, a PRO sticker is affixed to the shipment. The driver's onboard computer communicates important information about the shipment and the driver's status back to the dispatcher. Immediately, plans get under way to receive the shipment at the service center.

After the city driver returns to the service center, the trailer is quickly unloaded. Shipments are weighed and loaded onto outbound trailers headed to destination service centers. Information about shipments moves even more quickly. According to Dave, "The destination service centers know what's coming in and begin planning the run sheets for the next day's deliveries long before trailers ever leave the origin service center."

When a trailer is full, it's closed, sealed and ready for the night driver. New Penn linehaul drivers work through the night getting their cargo safely to destination service centers. On arrival, the shipments move off the trailer, over to delivery trailers and the process starts again.

Every day is different, every delivery is different, but the dedication is always the same: Priority treatment for every shipment. Bring this level of service to your supply chain; call New Penn at 1-800-285-5000, or visit us online today.

We have the best customers, and they said . . .

New England map highlighting Southington, Conn."New Penn delivered our refrigerator last night, and the driver [Ron Wolfenhaut, Southington, Conn.] went ABOVE & BEYOND his responsibilities.

"First, it was pouring rain. Second, he did not want to damage our driveway/lawn with his truck, so he hand-pulled the pallet jack up our hill/driveway. Third, he did not want to leave the fridge out in the rain, so he offered to move it into our garage. Fourth, the fridge was too large, so he had to remove it from the pallet and physically maneuver the fridge by hand into our garage. Lastly, he was very polite and nice.

"Your company advertises that you pay extra for top-notch shipping. Our experience certainly supports your statement!"—Andy Johanson

Delivering an exceptional customer experience

"A New Penn dispatcher doesn't have much time for chitchat. From overseeing dockworkers and drivers, to scheduling pickups and deliveries, managing customer service, and maintaining a safe workplace, it's a busy workday.

Dispatcher John Ruhl, New Jersey map with Cinnaminson highlighted

"It's busiest in the morning, from 6:30 to 9:30, when we're trying to get our drivers on the road," says John Ruhl, Cinnaminson, N.J., dispatcher. "And timelines are probably the biggest issue we face. Customers are managing their inventories so tightly that when they need a shipment, they need it 'now.'"

"Customers expect the best, and we put forth the effort to give them that," adds John, attributing the company's strong track record to attitude, flexibility and honesty.

"We are New Penn, and we take pride in being New Penn. Our people care. Drivers, dockworkers, supervisors, office—we all feel a part of it and take a personal responsibility for delivering good service."

John explains that when it comes to flexibility, communication is the name of the game. "We're tremendously flexible and go above the ordinary to meet our customers' needs." He adds that in those extraordinary situations, call! "We're here 24/7 and a phone call will reach us sooner than an email, giving us more time to get the ball rolling."

Summing it up, John says, "The most important thing in customer service is honesty. Most times, customers will understand if you're being straight with them."

John Ruhl is just one example of the people and service that keep customers coming back to New Penn.

A page from New Penn history

On March 1, 1932, the young son of famed aviator Charles Lindbergh was kidnapped from his home in New Jersey.

The house was just 30 miles from an important transportation route, and trucks were searched.

Bad timing, but New Penn was using a coal truck to make its New York run while the regular vehicle was being repaired.

When the drivers stopped at a restaurant, two policemen became suspicious; a cargo of silk dresses in a coal truck?

Producing the proper papers, the drivers convinced police to release them and their shipment.
