What's New at New Penn

The "A Team" to Puerto Rico

Moving shipments from "A" to "B" is a little trickier when the "B" is Puerto Rico. Coordinating with ocean sailings and the Hacienda requirements adds another level of complexity to supply chains.

At New Penn, we have dedicated teams in South Kearny, N.J., and San Juan, which specialize in consolidating shipments, coordinating offshore sailings, managing the necessary filings and ensuring rapid delivery after shipments reach the island. Quite simply, these teams know how to get things done when it comes to shipping to and from Puerto Rico.

In addition, our sailing schedule from the Northeast allows pickups to be made as late as Thursday to meet a Friday sailing. Shipments that leave New Jersey on Friday are in Puerto Rico and out for delivery on Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week. That means you get three or four business-day service at ocean rates.

Hundreds of customers make New Penn the largest NVOCC in the Northeast serving Puerto Rico, and our green containers are a familiar sight at the ports.

A customer had this to say . . .

SOSWhen a customer sent an SOS about a shipment that needed to make a Friday sailing, our handling of the situation prompted the San Juanconsignee to email us, saying:

"OMG Scott, u make my weekend! . . . there's nothing like New Penn! . . . w/you and Pedro. We're all set and nothing else! Luv u! . . . Happy weekend!"

In proclaiming National Transportation Week (May 15-21) and National Defense Transportation Day (May 20), President Obama positioned U.S. competitiveness as dependent on infrastructure. "To attract new businesses to our shores, we must rebuild crumbling roads and bridges and continue to invest in the modernization of our infrastructure."

He also said, "Together, we can continue the work begun by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to maintain a world-class logistics network, create new jobs and win the future for our children." Included in the president's 2012 budget plan is a large, six-year spending program for combining rail, freight and traditional highway projects; the administration has not said how to pay for it.

In releasing its quarterly survey of senior loan officers in May, the Federal Reserve said: "The April survey indicated that, on net, bank lending standards and terms generally had eased somewhat further during the first quarter of this year."

They added that this "also pointed to a more favorable or less uncertain economic outlook.".

Customers value our guaranteed services . . .

Guaranteed delivery options"I wanted to let your company know how much we appreciate your guaranteed services. . . being in the newspaper insert business, it is important that all our shipments not only deliver on time, but also before or at a definite time.

"This is where your various guaranteed service options really help us out. Whether it is a time-definite shipment or just a day-definite shipment, each option lets us choose what will serve our customer's needs at a fraction of the cost of hiring an expediting company or air freight.

"While we rely on New Penn's next-day service throughout the Northeastern United States every day on regular shipments . . . it is nice to know we can count on New Penn guaranteed services when there are deadlines to meet.

"A newspaper advertisement that arrives even the slightest bit late isn't worth the paper it's printed on in a lot of cases, and I am happy to say that although you have a no-hassle, money-back guarantee on your guaranteed services, we've never had to collect.

"Kudos to New Penn on their outstanding, easy-to-use guaranteed services and overall, 'can't be beat' next-day coverage in the Northeastern United States!!!"—Ken Patterson, Creps United Publications

Delivering an exceptional customer experience

"I'm proud of what I do, day in and day out, as a New Penn employee," says Pedro Torres Segui, director of Caribbean Sales & Operations for New Penn. "I am helping my country and my people."

Pedro Torres Segui, Puerto Rico map with San Juan highlighted

Pedro explains that as an island of nearly four-million people, Puerto Rico depends on goods being shipped in by ocean or air. "People forget that what we do is more than move shipments. When we help get products on the shelves of grocers, pharmacies and hardware stores, we're helping Puerto Ricans get medicine for their health and paint to make their homes look neat and clean. When I go shopping with my wife, I feel proud that I am part of that," says Pedro.

Pedro joined New Penn 11 years ago after working in the telecommunications industry. "I didn't know pallets or skids at the time," he jokes. He caught on fast, working first in sales, then taking on additional operational responsibilities to ensure smooth pickups and deliveries and minimize delays stemming from the Puerto Rican IRS.

"Whenever we get a new customer, I make it a point to join the driver for the first pickup or delivery," adds Pedro. "I want to make sure the shipment is handled properly, and it gives me an opportunity to meet the customer's employees, who actually work with the shipments. Customers don't expect this level of service!"

Pedro Torres Segui is just one example of the people and service that keep customers coming back to New Penn.

A page from New Penn history

Visit Lebanon, Pa., and you'll most likely see the name "Arnold" around town.

building

I grew up in Lebanon, and I share it back," Ed Arnold is reported as saying.

Edward H. Arnold, son of New Penn founder Henry Arnold, was active in the family business for 40 years, many of them as the chairman, president and CEO of the holding company, Arnold Industries.

And share he did!

Known for his philanthropy, Arnold's name graces the Lebanon Community Library and the Lebanon Valley College sports center.

He and his wife were primary contributors to the community's Sexual Assault Resource and Counseling Center, the construction of a new tourist center and other projects.

While no longer active in the company since its sale to Roadway Corp. in 2001, the Arnolds continue to be enthusiastic benefactors to the area and its citizens.

It's a legacy of giving back that adds to the New Penn Pride shared by employees today.
