What's New at New Penn

Drivers make a difference

That's our philosophy, and that's why New Penn goes out of the way to hire the best candidates and retain the best driver.

What makes a great driver? It begins with knowing the equipment, skillfully maneuvering that equipment on the streets and at customers' docks and safely driving in all weather and road conditions.

There's more. Great drivers also know they represent New Penn. That means treating shipments with care, working well with our customers' personnel and coordinating with others on the New Penn team to make sure shipments reach their destinations on time and damage free.

There's a lot of pride in being a New Penn driver, and it shows in low turnover (our road drivers average 12.56 years of service with us) and exceptional customer service.

As capacity becomes tight, and we add drivers to the New Penn team, please understand that we're choosey. It takes time to find the right drivers for our team and your shipments.

When you think about it, that's why you choose New Penn!

Women at dry cleanersConference Board index shows slight improvement in consumer confidence

In its April report, The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® showed a gain from 63.8 in March to 65.4 in April.

According to Lynn Franco, director of The Conference Board Consumer Research Center, "Consumer confidence, which had declined sharply in March, posted a modest gain in April. Consumers' short-term outlook improved slightly, suggesting that the uncertainty expressed last month is easing. Inflation expectations, which had spiked, retreated somewhat in April. Although confidence remains weak, consumers' assessment of current conditions gained ground for the seventh straight month, a sign that the economic recovery continues."

The word is out . . . Go New Penn to Puerto Rico

There's a reason New Penn is the largest NVOCC in the Northeast serving Puerto Rico: great service!

New Penn coverage map, Puerto Rico and U.S. flags, Puerto Rico

Unlike freight forwarders who use multiple carriers as part of their service to Puerto Rico, New Penn personnel are in control of the shipment from your dock door to its final delivery. That same professional service you experience in the Northeast is also practiced on the island for 99-percent, claims-free deliveries.

Our stature in the lane also means fast delivery when your shipment reaches Puerto Rico. While a sailing typically includes 350–450 containers, those with New Penn shipments receive priority attention. Shipments reach our warehouse before noon on the landing day, which allows us to deliver to consignees that same day or the next. That's fast.

With New Penn, we give personal attention to shipments, catching issues before they become problems.

For example, the Puerto Rico tax office recently selected a customer's "hot" shipment for inspection. "Electronic monitoring revealed the inspection while the shipment was en route to the island; however, we also knew the tax office would be closed for a holiday when the shipment arrived in port," says Pedro Torres Segui, director, Caribbean Sales and Operations.

Not willing to risk further delay, New Penn people were at the tax office when the doors opened the next morning to ensure the shipment cleared inspection quickly. "New Penn delivered on time, even when the shipment was marked for inspection," says Pedro.

We have the best customers, and they said . . .

Offshore Service Domestic Ocean to Puerto Rico" . . . we would like to thank everyone at New Penn both at the offices in South Kearny and in Puerto Rico who worked hard on these two shipments. Special thanks to Ruben [Gonzalez], Mayra [Nevarez] and Edwin [Baez] in Puerto Rico for all the extra efforts that were done to make sure that the shipment was cleared and delivered in a timely manner even though it had a tax hold.

"Perfecseal is able to meet our end customers' needs because of all these efforts by New Penn. That is what is called having a good business relationship. Thanks to all."—Antoinette Colón, Perfecseal Puerto Rico

Water Wise

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is warning that half the United States is at above-average risk for flooding this spring.

Car in high water, bridge over river, High Water sign, sand bags

Stay safe. If you see water flowing across the road, don't go there.

At highway speeds, you can lose control with as little as one inch of water on the road.

After a vehicle is lifted off the road surface, it can be pushed sideways and rolled over, trapping passengers.

Even water that is standing on the road can be dangerous, hiding wash outs and deep potholes.

A better idea is to plan alternate routes and stay clear of water on roadways.

Delivering an exceptional customer experience

"I love my job," says Cheryl Goulart, customer service representative, Providence, R.I. "We have a nice customer base, and I spend a lot of time with them. It's rewarding to know that we helped someone."

Customer Service Representative Cheryl-Goulart, Rhode Island map with Providencehighlighted

Cheryl admits that customer service work can be taxing. "There's a lot of multitasking—working phones, preparing spreadsheets and watching the 'hot commits' (time-sensitive shipments) in the system."

Although an employee of New Penn for nine years, about six of them in customer service, Cheryl knows first-hand that New Penn is not like other transportation providers. "New Penn jumps through hoops for our customers," she explains. "Sometimes it's amazing that it all comes together!"

Cheryl adds that as a customer service representative, she doesn't rely only on technology. "We keep our eyes on shipments and follow up personally with customers. And if a customer calls in a shipment that requires more attention, I'll follow through."

The customer service representatives work as a team, "I have the greatest co-workers, and we communicate well with each other. For example, if someone is going to be out, they leave information that will help the others follow up."

Cheryl Goulart is just one example of the people and service that keep customers coming back to New Penn.

A page from New Penn history

It was during the '60s and '70s that New Penn greatly expanded its regional footprint.

stopwatch

The 1968 acquisition of Long Island Transportation meant New Penn could offer next-day service from central Pennsylvania to northern New Jersey and Long Island, N.Y.

Then in 1978, New Penn bought Red Ball Express, enabling direct-service into all of New England.

Throughout this growth, we maintained our commitment to our unique culture which continues to make New Penn the "Best of the Best."
