U.S. currencyWeak dollar has benefits

According to Harvard University economics professor Martin Feldstein, a weak dollar benefits the U.S. economy.

"A lower dollar means more exports, and it also means a shift from consuming imported products to consuming goods and services that we produce in the United States," said Feldstein.

American Trucking Associations (ATA) praised the Obama administration for setting the first fuel-efficiency standards for medium- and heavy-duty trucks.

"While it is too early to know all the potential effects of this rule, we do know it sets us on a path to a future where we depend less on foreign oil, spend less on fuel and contribute less to climate change," said ATA President and CEO Bill Graves.

Delivering an exceptional customer experience

In 1988, Rick Cox was looking for a second part-time job to help pay college expenses at Penn State. The Altoona New Penn center needed a nighttime billing clerk, and the hours worked with Rick's schedule. Since then, Rick and the center have developed in ways that were only dreams 23 years ago.

Pennsyvlvania map with Altoona highlighted. Rick Cox

"When I first started, we had four drivers, four dock doors and about 40 bills a night," remembers Rick. "In 1994, we moved into a new location with 16 doors. Business levels continued to increase, and by '96, we had 22 doors and had added more drivers, sales people, supervisors and office staff. Now, we're at 24 doors and nearly 50 employees."

In a similar way, Rick's career at New Penn developed. By 1992, he was working full time as a supervisor/dispatcher, and in 1996, was promoted to terminal manager for Altoona. "I love the challenge. I'm here at 2:30 every morning to get ready for the day . . . overseeing the inbound, routing freight for the day, lining up drivers."

Rick is quick to acknowledge he is only one contributor to Altoona's growth, "I'm here to provide leadership, but we have a strong core with our sales team, drivers and office. No matter what's asked of them, they do it in a way that's above and beyond."

As terminal manager, Rick sets the tone, emphasizing customer relationships based on a home-style flavor, a hands-on approach, and personal accountability. "The personal touch we bring to our customers is exactly what brings them here to us," Rick says. "Our growth has been incredible. We've never seen a down year, and I'm proud to say that in July, we broke several of our records, including the most pickups in a day and the most total revenue in a month. There's no limit to what we can do!"

Rick Cox is just one example of the people and service that keep customers coming back to New Penn.

New Penn remembers

On the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on our soil, we remember the innocent victims, the first responders who went to their aid and the many men and women who didn't seek to be heroes, but were thrust into those roles by the events of 9/11.

Let us never forget their sacrifices.
